Where it all started...
Maria Montessori , Italy’s first female doctor at the turn of the century, understood the importance of movement in a child’s life.  Instead of suppressing this natural desire to act on the world around, she believed children should be given the freedom to express themselves and the guidance to learn that different situations require different behavior.  As a result, she focused the energies of the children she taught, on natural work—daily living.  By giving her students a reason to move, such as sweeping the floor with little brooms or helping set a table for lunch, the children began to take responsibilities for their actions—the first step toward a disciplined life.  After almost 100 years of international application, the Montessori Method has helped children learn from and explore their relationship with their environment.

"The most important period of life is not the ages of university studies, but the first one, the ages birth to age six.  For that time when man’s intelligence; his greatest implement, is being formed.  But not only his intelligence; the full totality of his psychic powers… at no other age has the child a greater need of an intelligent help, and any obstacle that impedes his creative work will lessen the chance he has of achieving perfection.”
Dr. Maria Montessori

Sundrops Montessori School
Sundrops is here to provide families with a pleasant nurturing educational atmosphere.  Inspired by the process of educating children through the work of
Dr. Maria Montessori,  Sundrops began serving low country families in 1998.  Sundrops has directed it’s efforts toward creating an environment sensitive to the physical, educational, and emotional needs of children.   Our vision & hope is to awaken the children’s  natural desire to learn and to encourage themselves in carefully prepared surroundings.
Sundrops offers a Montessori environment carefully arranged by certified Montessori directress’. Specially crafted Montessori materials and other child-sized tools are organized on low shelves; each activity within  reach of even the youngest child. The multi-aged community allows the  children to help teach and learn from one another,  mutually benefiting all ages. Children are free to choose their “work” and are allowed to pursue their interests until they feel it’s time to move on to another activity.  The directress will  observe and guide the children’s choices to ensure proper use of the  materials.
“The child should love everything that he learns for his mental and emotional growths are linked.  Whatever is presented to him must be made beautiful and clear.”

Daily Songs & Activities Note from Ms. Jax!
Posted by shannon on Wednesday, October 03 @ 19:14:10 CDT (70 reads)

Hey Parents!
Just wanted to let you know how yesterday went and what my plans for next week are. Yesterday we learned about the torso, spine, arms, and legs, elbows and knees. We spent some time talking about the interconnectedness of the body. Then we applied this to making our people puppets. The kids seemed to really enjoy the process and tying the brads together (to make the joints) was good fine motor skill work. Next week I plan on bringing in a story to integrate into our time and the kids will then have the chance to decorate their finished puppets and take them home.
Hope you are having a great week!
jax.

Daily Songs & Activities Creative Spanish with Ms. Andonia
Posted by shannon on Monday, September 17 @ 16:56:42 CDT (72 reads)

We always begin with some familiar songs and prompt/response.We
> have a new "Hola" song this year. We are singing (instead of the Hola greeting)...Buenos Dias (good morning), Buenos Tardes (good afternoon) and Buenos Noches (good night). We then did some kid-yoga in Spanish to move our bodies. We did the sun position (El Sol), we did the full moon position (La Bella Luna), we did the airplane position (El Avion),we did Estrellas (the star position) and we did the Tree (El Arbol)..we call it Arbol Difficil (the tricky tree) because it is a little hard to do! We also do "respiras grande"...deep breaths...from time to time. And, of course, tortugas!
>  We talked about Numeros (1-20), the colores, el tiempo (the weather), Los continentes.
>  We talked about different kinds of clothes (ropas). Vestidas (dresses), Camiseta (shirt), cortos (shorts), pantalones (long pants), faldas (skirts), calcetines (socks) zapatos (shoes), abrigos (coats), sombreros (hats), and Pallamas (pajamas). We did a game to talk about who was wearing what. Then we used the color flags (in Spanish) to determine who was wearing which colors.
>   We finished up with a story called FIESTA. It is a counting story (participatory) that progresses through the steps a group of children take to fill a Pinata in preparation for a *****pleanos (birthday party.)
